Russia’s capital has always exerted a powerful influence in the business world, regarded as the place to make money, contacts and take one’s career to the next level. But while the two cities remain very different, in recent years there has been a marked trend for professionals to return from Moscow to St. Petersburg. People are coming home. When looking at the Russian employment market in 2006 and early 2007 there are no big surprises for anyone who has been following it closely over the last few years — just as ever, companies are expanding across the board and faster than they can locate the specialists that they need. But at the same time there are signs of developing maturity and diversity. Salaries are rising on the back of overall economic stability, not just as a result of this being a job seeker's market, and are becoming more closely indexed to skills and experience. Given the high degree of dynamism and mobility, loyalty is increasingly important for employers. Ability is valued above anything else and most talent is now homegrown.
